I attended a fantastic event on Friday night at the Dana Centre, which is part of the London Science Museum. It was called the Science of the Beautiful Game and there was a panel of experts present, including a sports psychologist and an exercise physiologist answering questions from the audience prior to and after the England vs Algeria match as well as at half-time. It was not only fascinating to discuss the physical and psychological aspects of the preparation of the players, but 3 key items were also discussed as being vital to success:
Ethical Coaching 06/18/2010
It is important to state that The Coaching Pyramid Company abides by a set of ethical and professional guidelines. This is particularly important because at present, coaching is an unregulated profession. We abide by the ethical guidelines below, set down by the International Coach Federation, (ICF) a global coaching body with in excess of 15,000 members world-wide. These standards will be adhered to by your coach: Professional Conduct I will conduct myself in a manner that reflects positively upon the coaching profession and I will refrain from engaging in conduct or making statements that may negatively impact the public's understanding or acceptance of coaching as a profession. I will accurately create, maintain, store and dispose of any records of work done in relation to the practice of coaching in a way that promotes confidentiality and complies with any applicable laws. Professional Client Relationships I will be responsible for setting clear, appropriate, and culturally sensitive boundaries that govern any contact that I may have with my clients. I will construct clear agreements with my clients, and will honor all agreements made in the context of professional coaching relationships. I will ensure that, prior to or at the initial session, my coaching client understands the nature of coaching, the bounds of confidentiality, financial arrangements and other terms of the coaching agreement. I will accurately identify my qualifications, expertise and experience as a coach. If I believe a client would be better served by another coach, or by another resource, I will encourage the client to make a change. I will suggest that my clients seek the services of other professionals when deemed appropriate or necessary. Confidentiality/Privacy I will respect the confidentiality of my client's information, except as otherwise authorised by my client, or as required by law. I will obtain agreement with my clients before releasing their names as clients or references or any other client identifying information. Different thinking, different results... 06/17/2010
Einstein once said that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result. Often people can waste many years doing this before they realise that a different approach is needed. The fantastic thing about coaching is acheiving those 'breakthrough' moments with clients. Maybe for years a person has been following certain patterns of behaviour. Through coaching many of my clients have come to realise that they have created their own prisons, carrying guilt and responsibilities that were not theirs to carry. The relief can be immense as a client comes to realise that they can choose to live differently. This is what I love about the work that I do. The Coaching Philosophy 06/16/2010
A little snippet revealing another aspect of coaching! Coaching is not counselling, offering advice or telling people what they should do. A fundamental principle in professional coaching is that the client holds the key to their own progress - the coach is the guide who helps the client see both where and how to look for the answers they seek, acts as an honest, but impartial commentator and offers support and direction in a confidential setting. Coaching helps people produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses or organisations and through coaching, clients can enhance their performance, boost their self confidence and improve their quality of life. Coaching for Students & Young People 06/15/2010
It is sad to hear how the recession has affected the job opportunities of our young people. I think we have to acknowledge that when there seems to be little to aim for, even the most enthusiastic people would begin to flag. This is why I want to offer pro-bono coaching to up to 3 young people and would love to hear from any young people between the ages of 16 and 21 who would like to try coaching for free. ''The future depends on what we do in the present.'' - Mahatma Gandhi Today's economic climate means that young job seekers need to have that extra 'edge.' The Coaching Pyramid Co. coaches young adults and works with them to create personal development plans for life and work. We will help you assess your strengths, key competencies and USPs (unique selling propositions / points) and can help you develop your ideas in terms of planning your future, helping you identify or become more specific about what you want it to 'look' like and 'feel' like and exactly what you want to get from it. We will then break all this down into manageable stages, so that you can easily get started on achieving your ambitions. Clarity and Understanding We will spend time with you exploring who you are, what is important to you and what kind of personality you have. You will be far more successful in life if you live according to the values that are a part of who you are. These things determine the way you feel, think and act and if you are not in tune with them, you can be left with a feeling that something is 'wrong.' We will establish these points and then together we will create a plan that is based on a deep understanding of what makes you tick and also, very importantly, allows you to play to your strengths. Once we know what you want AND need from your life and your career, we will work together to break this down into goals that you can easily work towards. Planning We will create a structured 'plan of attack' to help you progress and moving in the right direction. We will also break down the execution of the goals so you have a clear path to follow. Your coach will also work with you to overcome any practical or personal obstacles which may stand in the way. Attitude & Motivation We will work on getting in the right frame of mind to achieve success. You will develop confidence and through personal exploration of your of your abilities and what you really want, you will present yourself as a better and more attractive prospect to potential employers. We will also work on ensuring that the beliefs you hold about yourself and the world around you are positive ones that will help you to get ahead. CV Preparation / Interview preparation Want to create a killer CV? We have significant experience in the staffing / recruitment industry and will work with you on creating a great CV. You will get expert help with preparing for interviews and we give you an insight into how employers think. Lean to play to your strengths and up your game! We will supply you with the input you need to help you stand out both on paper and in person... Support and Encouragement We will support and encourage you every step of the way! Throughout history, difficult economies have been shown to produce great numbers of entrepreneurs and successful people. We also provide coaching and practical support for innovative young entrepreneurs who would either like to become self employed or who are already generating income from their own enterprises. The Path To Personal Progress 06/13/2010
I have been asked about the origin of the company name - The Coaching Pyramid Company. I thought I should therefore explain for those that were wondering... Maslow's theory states that once our basic needs are met, we start to think about or take action to try to move beyond our current 'level' and that ultimately, we will start to fulfil our own personal potential more fully as we move towards the top of the 'pyramid.' This can sometimes be a slow and difficult process, sometimes we secretly believe we can't progress any further, or we get distracted or 'stuck' where we are and therefore fail to realise our full potential. Others have their eye on the peak and and would like to be held accountable for making sure they reach it through being encouraged and motivated - especially when at times the going can be tough. These are the points at which coaching can make a significant difference. Contact us for a FREE consultation with a qualified coach. Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory Some background about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: Level 1 - Physiological Needs These are biological needs. They consist of needs for oxygen, food, water, and a relatively constant body temperature. They are the strongest needs because if a person were deprived of all needs, the physiological ones would come first in the person's search for satisfaction. Level 2 - Safety Needs When all physiological needs are satisfied and are no longer controlling thoughts and behaviors, needs for security can become active. Adults have little awareness of their security needs except in times of emergency or periods of disorganization in the social structure (such as widespread rioting). Children often display the signs of insecurity and the need to be safe. Level 3 - Need for Love, Affection and To Belong When the needs for safety and for physiological well-being are satisfied, the next class of needs for love, affection and belonging can emerge. Maslow states that people seek to overcome feelings of loneliness and alienation. This involves both giving and receiving love, affection and the sense of belonging. Level 4 - Need for Esteem When the first three classes of needs are satisfied, the needs for esteem can become dominant. These involve needs for both self-esteem and for the esteem a person gets from others. Humans have a need for a stable, firmly based, high level of self-respect, and respect from others. When these needs are satisfied, the person feels self-confident and valuable as a person in the world. When these needs are frustrated, the person feels inferior, weak, helpless and worthless. Level 5 - Need for Self-Actualisation When all of the forenamed needs are satisfied, the need for self-actualization is activated. Maslow describes self-actualisation as a person's need to be and do that which the person was "born to do." Maslow later identified other needs including the need to appreciate beauty and to understand and therefore to gain greater control (of a physical or social environment, for instance.)
